Swallowing Therapy…There’s An App For That!

Believe it or not, there is now a swallowing therapy app that’s available for patients and clinicians who have IPhones and IPads.   This app is a great tool for helping patients complete their swallowing exercises in between therapy sessions.  What will they think of next??

The app is called ISwallow and can be set up by any swallowing clinician (you just have to email UC Davis and verify that you are a dysphagia clinician to get a password).   So my patients who have IPhones just download the FREE app, and then I can log-in to the app on their device to set up their swallowing therapy exercise program.

First, I go in to the app and select which exercises my patient needs to do based on the results of the swallowing evaluation.  Just about every swallowing therapy exercise speech pathologists prescribe is on there.   Then I set how many repetitions of each exercise the patient should complete and select the specific times of day when the patient should do the program.  The program allows you to set 1 to 4 different times a day for the exercises.

The patient will then get a reminder on their IPhone or IPad whenever it is time to do their exercises. How great is that!

When the patient goes to the ISwallow program, they can watch narrated videos demonstrating each exercise.

After the patient completes the exercises, they can then indicate that they’ve done their exercises on the ISwallow journal so I can see how often they’ve been doing with the exercises outside of therapy.

Kudos to the swallowing team at UC Davis for developing this great app to help patients with completing their swallowing therapy exercises between sessions!
